  3.                      THE CONFESSION OF FAITH

  5. The matter of confessing our faith has come into controversy and
  6. disrepute in recent years through an over-emphasis and
  7. over-simplification of the vital truth of confession which has
  8. reduced it from'a valid and necessary expression of faith, to
  9. techniques and formulas.  Despite the distortions of unbalanced
  10. teachers and the presumptions of many foolish people, the
  11. confession of faith is not only scriptural, but essential to an
  12. effective faith life.

  14. 1.   THE MEANING OF CONFESSION.
  15.  
  16.      The word confession comes from the Greek expression
  17.      "homologia".  In Hebrews 3:1 it is translated "profession",
  18.      but more correctly is "confession".  These two Greek words -
  19.      "homo" = the same, and "logia" = the word, gives us the
  20.      thought of "the same word".
  21.  
  22.      our confession of faith is therefore to say the same thing
  23.      that God has said.  We do not express doubt, fear, unbelief or
  24.      other negative attitudes.  Our confession is an affirmation of
  25.      truth - a declaration of God's word and will.  It is a
  26.      positive statement of the faith words God has already
  27.      declared.  We say them again and this is homologia, or the
  28.      confession of faith.

  30. 2.   THE HIGH PRIEST OF OUR CONFESSION
  31.  
  32.      In the Old Testament every High Priest received sacrifices to
  33.      be offered, but they could not accept an animal or bird to be
  34.      sacrificed if it was blemished.  It had to be perfect.  The
  35.      New Testament church does not have animal sacrifices, but one
  36.      of our sacrifices unto God is the confession of our faith or
  37.      giving thanks to God.

  39.      Hebrews 13:15 - "giving thanks", can be translated as
  40.      "confessing to". it comes from the Greek word "homologia". 
  41.      Ne. despite our feelings or apprehensions, we align ourselves
  42.      with God's word and positively declare it to be true.  We
  43.      cannot bring an imperfect sacrifice to Jesus.  IT is negative,
  44.      untrue or fearful.  He cannot receive it.  The sacrifice is
  45.      blemished and must be rejected.

  47.      This is one of the reasons why many people do not get their
  48.      prayers answered.  They come to Jesus, but do not realise that
  49.      He can only receive a perfect offering - the confession of
  50.      faith, and He is specifically the High Priest of this
  51.      spiritual function.  He waits to hear us declare God's truth
  52.      in our prayer instead of unbelief.
  53.  
  54.      Psalm 19:14 says, "[et the words of my mouth and the
  55.      meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, 0 Lord, my
  56.      strength, and my redeemer".  Let the confession of our mouth
  57.      be aligned with God's own statements, even to the repetition
  58.      of scripture if we are not able to express any positive trust
  59.      in God with our own words.

  61. 3.   THE WORD OF FAITH MUST BE SPOKEN
  62.  
  63.      A.   Romans 10:8-10 shows us that the word of faith must be
  64.           spoken and not
  65.  
  66.           merely a concept or attitude of the mind.  Speaking the
  67.           truth that salvation has been received actually releases
  68.           it in the life of the person receiving Christ, but
  69.           without a declaration, his faith in Christ to save him is
  70.           ineffective- He must make confession of his salvation
  71.           with his mouth.

  73.           The scripture says that this "word of faith" is in our
  74.           mouth, and heart.
  75.  
  76.      B.   2 Corinthians 4:13 shows us that when we receive the
  77.           "Spirit of faith", we not only  believe, but.we speak out
  78.           what we believe.
  79.  
  80.      C.   This same truth is taught in Mark 11:23.  Jesus states
  81.           three times in this Verse that faith and speaking are
  82.           essentials to each other.

  85.      When we speak or confess God's word, it becomes the creative
  86.      word of God (7 of God's creative acts in Genesis 1 were
  87.      "spoken into being" by His word.
  88.  
  89.      Our confession of faith in God validates His word to us in the
  90.      same way that signing a cheque releases the potential of a
  91.      bank account.

  93. 4.   THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE SPOKEN WORD AND THE MIRACULOUS
  94.  
  95. A.   God said, "Let there be light" (Gen. 1:3)
  96.  
  97. B.   Noah reached deliverance and received it. (Heb. 11:7)
  98.  
  99. C.   Moses decreed the plagues (Ex. 7-11)
  100.  
  101. D.   Elijah spoke drought into being (1 Kings 17:1), and called
  102.      fire down from heaven (1 Kings 18:37-38)
  103.  
  104. E.   Joshua commanded the sun and moon to stand still
  105.      (Joshua-10:12)
  106.  
  107. F.   Hebrew three confessed the word (Is. 43:2, and Dan. 3:-17)
  108.  
  109. G.   Jesus proclaimed His resurrection (Matt. 16:21, 17:9, and 23),
  110.  
  111. H.   Most New Testament miracles were_spoken into being - lame man
  112.      at Gate beautiful (Acts 3:_6), Dorcas (Acts 9:40), and the
  113.      lame_man at Lystra (Acts 14:10.)
  114.  
  115.      Rom. 4;17.  God who raises the dead and calls those things
  116.      which be not as though they were.  This is God's faith
  117.      statement of things as they_will be when there is no sign at
  118.      it.
  119.  
  120.      The changing of Abram's and Sarai's names to Abraham and Sarah
  121.      is a classic example of such faith declarations by God and
  122.      their subsequent confession by His people.  Abram means
  123.      "exalted father", while Abraham means "father of a multitude". 
  124.      Sarai means "Jah is Prince", but Sarah is "Princess" because
  125.      she would become the joyful mother of princes.  God Himself
  126.      gave them their new names and thus declared years in advance
  127.      of the event that they would produce children.  Every day as
  128.      they called each other by their new names, they were
  129.      "confessing God's word" about them.
  130.  
  131. 5.   THE POWER OF THE TONGUE
  132.  
  133.      The following scriptures show that the tongue has an awesome
  134.      power for good or evil and must be used in a positive way to
  135.      align us with God's revealed word and His statements of truth.
  136.  
  137.      Prov. 12:14 - "A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit
  138.                     of his mouth."
  139.      Prov. 12:18 -  but the tongue of the wise is health."
  140.      Prov. 15:4  - "A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but
  141.                     perverseness therein is a breach in the
  142.                     spirit."
  143.      Prov. 15:23 - "A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and
  144.                     a word spoken in due season, how good is it!"
  145.      Prov. 18:20-21_- "Death and life are in the power of the
  146.                     tongue."
  147.      Mark 11:23 -  "He that believeth ... shall have whatsoever he
  148.                     saith."
  149.      James-3:6-8 - "The tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity ...
  150.                     but the tongue can no man tame."

  152. 6.   THE CONTENT OF OUR CONFESSION
  153.  
  154.      It is precisely at this point that many people have pushed
  155.      "confession," to an extreme and have often moved into either
  156.      presumption or disillusionment (or both).
  157.  
  158.      The confession of faith is not a magical formula - some "Open
  159.      Sesame" to limitless material wealth or spontaneous miracles. 
  160.      It must be connected to, and balanced by every other facet of
  161.      spiritual life such as prayer and fasting, determination, the
  162.      sovereignty of God, and timing, etc.
  163.  
  164. A.   Generally the confession of our faith is related to our
  165.      salvation or what we are in Christ.  Rom. 10:8-10, Philemon v
  166.      6, Gal. 2:20, Phil. 4:13, 3:21, 2 Cor. 2:14, etc.

  168. B.   When God has opened His "rhema" to us, then we have a basis
  169.      for confessing that fact and speaking it into being.  Not
  170.      every promise in the Bible is, however, directly applicable to
  171.      us at any one time.  There are general promises or provisions
  172.      of redemption that are applicable to all of us, but there are
  173.      other promises that who made to individuals which may not be
  174.      claimable without a direct rhema from God, ie, Jesus' word to
  175.      Peter "come and walk on water" is not a general promise to
  176.      everyone to be claimed at their own discretion.

  178. C.   In any event the confession of our faith must always be
  179.      "homologia", ie saying again what God has said.  Note.  Heb.
  180.      13:5-6, "we say because He has said". and do not take the
  181.      initiative to "confess" any idea we choose. our faith is not
  182.      in the soulish area of auto-suggestion or mind over matter,
  183.      and every confession must originate from God for it to he true
  184.      "homologia". Even Jesus' declaration of His ministry was a
  185.      restatement of the Old Testament prophecy concerning Him.

  188. 7.   ABUSES OF CONFESSION
  189.  
  190.      on many occasions it has been taught that once a person_has
  191.      received prayer for healing that they should cease taking any
  192.      medication or refuse medical help, and confess their healing
  193.      until it is obvious. many tragic cases have resulted from this
  194.      practise.
